What does being a

eco florist mean…

We care for mother earth, we want to treat her well which is why we practice the following.

NO USE OF FLORAL FOAM

SEPPARATE OUR WASTE

LIMIT SINGLE USE PLASTICS

REDUCE LANDFILL, REUSE AND RECYCLE WHAT WE CAN

COMPOST ALL FLOWERS AND FOLIAGE

FOCUS ON LOCALLY SOURCED FLOWERS, LIMIT FLOWER MILES

WE WILL NOT USE DYED AND PRESERVED FLOWERS, NO SPRAY PAINT AND NO NOXIOUS WEEDS

You’d think because we work with a natural product floristry wouldn’t be so bad for the environment, this is not the case. The floristry industry in Australia and across the world contributes to mountains of landfill, often uses toxic chemicals and produces tones of carbon emissions. The over use of floral foam, or better known as oasis, contributes to millions of micro plastics ending up in our waterways. Floral foam is a product of convenience and is absolutely not necessary in producing a lovely finished product. At I heart Flowers we have been foam free for 4 years, choosing to use old world techniques for our floral displays. We think it actually produces a better design as floral foam wasn’t an all round wonder product, it had it’s draw backs and faults so it was easy for us to give up.

We do not use preserved or dyed flowers, I can’t even believe this has become a thing when nature produces the most exquisite natural product. Preserved and dyed flowers are almost always imported and are created using dangerous chemicals, not only is this harmful to the environment but it’s dangerous for us to work with and for you to be around. Dried flowers however are not preserved, they are dried naturally and we are more than happy to use them.

You are most likely unaware that many of the roses you see in florists around Australia actually come from Kenya and Ecuador, isn’t this crazy? I’m sure if you knew where they can from you’d think twice about buying them and instead choose flowers from a local farmer. We’re very lucky our studio is located only a few kilometers from the flower bowl of Victoria, so it’s not hard for us to source local flowers and foliage. We will always preference a local flower over imported and the only exception to this rule is when there is not enough local stock to meet demands.

We use very limited plastics in our work, just the occasional cable tie (single use) and water vials (multiuse). We used to use thousands of cable ties but have found alternative ways to build our work. On a job site we use pop up bins instead of plastic bin liners to gather up all our rubbish and green waste. When we return to the studio these are tipped on the floor and painstakingly sorted through. We compost all green waste, recycle paper and card board and end up with a very small pile of cut rubber bands and cable ties as landfill. This takes great effort and I can assure you we do not get paid enough from our clients to cover this work, we do it because we care for our planet.

FAQs

The all important…. how much do wedding flowers cost?

And our answer is almost always how long is a piece of string! Every couple have a different set of requirements but this is not helpful to you so we have put together a rough guide.

Wedding flowers will make up a minimum of 10-15% of your overall wedding budget but in our experience this ends up being closer to 20-30%.

For a standard wedding with a bridal party made up of Bride, Groom, 3 Bridesmaids, 3 Groomsmen, 100 Guests, requiring both Ceremony and Reception flowers will cost the following:

Minimum: $4k, this is for a very basic design

Average Spend: $7-12K

Premium Florals: $15+

A Large bridal party and guest numbers make a huge difference to your over all budget. Feature pieces such as large ceremony backdrops and ceiling installations are high ticket items that will increase the cost greatly.

“Why do my flowers cost so much, my friend said she paid X for hers?”

It’s very likely your friend got married pre-covid or at least booked her florist on pre-covid pricing. The difference in the wholesale cost of flowers from 2021 to 2022 is quite shocking. Our favorite white roses and orchids nearly doubled in price. Our staffing costs have increased by 25% and we all know what's happened to the cost of fuel. Life has just got more expensive and our costs need to reflect that.

Do you set up and pack down our flowers?

Yes of course, we are a full service floral design studio. Your quote will include delivery of bridal flowers and all set up and pack down services.

Can guests take the flowers home?

Absolutely, we have a range of services including a fully manned wrap station where we gift wrap all your wedding flowers and hand them to guests as they leave at the end of the night.

What happens if I get covid and my wedding day needs to be postponed?

We have a plan and set of terms and conditions we send to you before booking us as your florist, they clearly lay out what happens when and what costs you will incur if this were to happen.

I need some help with styling do you offer that service too?

We are designers first and foremost so can definitely give you advice on styling. We can source props, linen and anything else you require, all you have to do is ask.

Can you supply hire items such as candles and welcome signs?

Yes, we have a large range of items available for hire including tea-light holders, hurricanes, easels, signage, wishing well, archways and the list goes on. Just let us know what you need.
